The Lifestyle of the Professional Magic: The Gathering Player

by Anonymous Pro
[The Pro Tour player who wrote this asked me to share it without his name attached.  Please respect the author's anonymity by not sharing guesses or context clues about who may have written this piece.]

Many articles have been written about the lifestyle of a pro. They are all lying, of course. The first rule of the Pro Club is that you don't talk about it. Nobody ever tells the truth because it just doesn't sell. You are a consumer.

Staring at the bottom of your glass, you reflect upon yet another weekend. Yet another city that looks the same as the last one, yet another airport, yet another convention center, yet another hotel. This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time.

If the tournament is a success, you drink to celebrate. A failure and you drink to commiserate. Either way, the alcohol dulls the extreme emotions of victory and defeat. This tournament might be one of the lucky ones, where you make the early-morning trip home with some hardware jammed into your backpack, a phone full of notifications, and some weariness lifted from your heart. But most of the time, you are simply hungover and empty, passing your documents to the official before boarding your plane home.

Why would anyone want to live this life? One might also ask why someone would become a heroin addict. Cardboard crack is just as addictive as its cousin, and it has even been said that "nobody ever really leaves Magic, they just take breaks." Magic, the little scratch on the roof of your mouth that would heal if only you could stop tonguing it, but you can't.

As a young person seeking escape from a grime and lonely existence, Magic was the perfect vessel. It slowly changed from an escape to something more, as you became more and more competitive and began to reach higher and higher tiers of play. Attempts to play FNM or casual games of Commander couldn't get the juices going anymore, you now require a higher dosage of the drug only available at high-stakes tournaments.

You are awake late at night, unable to sleep, too many thoughts caught swirling around in your mind. With insomnia, nothing's real. Everything's far away. You're never really asleep, and you're never really awake. You head downstairs to the couch, turn on the television. A late night talk show host is going on about some debate. You haven't really been following the election. You shift over and knock a stack of cards over, and frantically drop to the floor to gather them all back up into a stack.

You wake up to the sound of your alarm clock. Somehow you had dragged yourself back into bed and slept for 7 hours. Its already 2pm, and your flight is leaving in a couple hours. You check your phone to see where you are off to this time. Providence, RI. What format is that again? You check your luggage. No cards packed, it must be a limited event. You wake up at O'Hare airport. Your last memory was checking your bags before leaving your house.

"I pass the turn. Go ahead." Your head bobs up. You have 5 cards in your hand. 3 lands in play. Your opponent has 5 creatures and your life-pad says you are on 3 life. Doesn't seem like you are winning this one.

Another round. You see your opponent signing the match slip, carefully check to see that its 2-1 in your favor. Good thing you got that one. What round is it again? The slip says 12. You always communicate in algebraic notation, only the losses matter, the number of wins changes yet remains irrelevant. You've already accumulated three losses, and in a tournament of this size your chances of top 8 are precisely zero. You simply have to grind out the last few rounds for pro points and cash. The money means nothing to you, it’s simply a number on a computer screen as your online account registers your input of cash, and as you pay bills, the numbers go up and down, up and down. As long as the number never reaches zero, it doesn't matter what it is. You remember a time when the number was so close to zero, and few of the changes were upwards, when earning $250 at a Grand Prix meant something to you. Now you flip coins in the parking lot for thousands of dollars, having started for smaller stakes, but kept on going up and up when flipping for $20 no longer gave you that rush you craved. Just like playing Magic for $250 no longer matters to you. You've dropped from events you could have won a single round in to cash.

You wake up to the sounds of your stomach growling. Home. You check your phone. It says you got 3 pro points in Providence. Good work. Heading downstairs, you open the fridge. There's some bread in the freezer, but the fridge is empty besides a bottle of ketchup, some half-rotten lettuce, an old jar of strawberry jam, and what looks like a couple spoons full of peanut butter.  How embarrassing, a house full of condiments but no food. You close the fridge and drop to your knees on the ground, laying your head on the cool marble countertop, purchased from an Ikea catalog. You've just slept for 13 hours, yet you still feel exhausted. That’s what a weekend of mental exertion with little sleep and a couple of flights will do to you.

People say you are lucky. That you are living the dream. Everywhere you go, they are all the same. Lawyers, Engineers, Teachers. "Do you have another job? How do you make enough money?" are constantly asked. The players you encounter commend you for your skill, and ask for advice you know will ultimately not help them at all. None of them ask questions worth asking. They only want to know what is the next deck to buy, what cards to bring in against this matchup, what is your secret shortcut to being so good. They don't want to know the truth, that success requires deep introspection, self-analysis and extreme dedication. They don't want to be told that even if they tried their hardest and did everything right, they simply aren't smart enough to succeed. "But at least you do what you love," you are told.

This story ends with you on a plane, sitting next to a man in a dark grey suit, sipping on a vodka tonic. Like others, he asked you what you did for a living out of habit, but when he found out his fake interest became real. You look at his briefcase and thousand-dollar watch and wonder if his lifestyle makes him happy, or if he also feels the same melancholy you do. You take out your laptop and begin to slowly drudge out yet another article.

    3. Why is it the most honest? Do you believe pros who describe their lifestyle differently are not being honest?

If I wrote something like that I'd make good and sure to be anonymous too.

    6. It's not as if he's commenting on -everyone- that wants to be pro. He's commenting on people that always talk to the pros on shortcuts, or easy ways to beat opponents, or the next top-8 deck in standard or modern. Because there is no easy way to determine that. The meta at a LSG and the GP and a PTQ can be completely different from each other, and there is no easy shortcut to success. So the article being depressing... it can't be helped. Imagine going to work every day, and then having to beat the boss at a dice game or poker to get a paycheck.

  4. Reading this gave me the impression that the author's problems may go much deeper than Magic.

  5. I was hoping it would be an interesting article, but it isn't. Someone just trying to look depressed, as if he can't change his lifestyle, or as if he is addicted to Magic (because, after all, Magic is kinda like heroin, according to the author at least). And, he has recently seen or read Fight Club, and he thinks (hopes?) he is simiral to Norton's character.

    1. Translation: "I was hoping this article would confirm my idealized fantasy of how great being a Magic Pro would be. The reality ended up being opposite of what I wanted and so I'm going to lash out at the author and blame him for being weak so as to allow myself to continue holding onto my false beliefs."

  12. If you're unhappy doing something, stop doing it and find something else. But don't plagiarize such a well-known piece of literature and try to pass it off as your own thoughts. This is the first, and absolute last, piece of your writing I will ever waste my time on. Quit while you're ahead, and leave Magic to the people who enjoy it, and writing to people with something original to say.

  13. I think this is a brave offering. Insightful. Very insightful. Those who dream of top 8-ing a GP but also have enjoyable work and a family are the lucky ones by the sounds of it (while we'll often dream of not having those ties and being able to just play magic 24/7).

It's not as glamourous as it's made out and I'm glad this person has spoken.

  14. I wish that this was longer so that people would give it more credibility.

The amount of money to be made isn't that much, and if you fail to get higher than the lowest level of pro play you're probably barely scraping by.

I never got as far into the lifestyle as the author, but I can identify with the story. After I qualified for the pro tour everything changed in my mind, I still to this day cannot enjoy a casual game of magic.

I think that if wotc wants a pro class of player they need to find a way to make it worth their time.

  17. This article speaks truth. Making your hobby into your profession is such a grind. Taking something you once loved and making it only a matter of numbers on a page representing "success." Success at the cost of enjoyment. Success at the cost of your soul. Been there, thankfully not with Magic.

That said, the pro in question (if the article isn't just a parody) seems to be significantly over the point of merely being bored by the grind.

    1. Actually, the piece is titled "The Lifestyle of the Professional Magic: The Gathering Player". Not A player, THE player. It certainly tries (maybe for clickbait purposes) to read as if this is some hidden aspect that's true for everyone.

    2. You find "The" vs "A" distinction to be relevant but not the word professional? basically all of the comments are from non-professionals saying that the OP is wrong. How would you have any idea? There are a few hundred people in the world who can relate first hand to what is being said here.

First rule of the pro tour.
Do not talk about the pro tour.
Second rule of the pro tour.
Do not talk about the pro tour.

    ?

If you thought being in the GP grind to keep on the pro tour was any different... that you can actually make a sustainable living only playing mtg, travelling and grinding while raking in $250 + maybe another $200 from cards each event while having to cover most your expenses... You're in need of a punch in the face.

  25. Cognitive Dissonance - "In psychology, cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time; performs an action that is contradictory to their beliefs, ideas, or values; or is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing beliefs, ideas or values." Wikipedia (which means likely lifted from somewhere else, as the definition is on target). In case it's not clear, a perfect example of cognitive dissonance is a devotees/fans/addicts of Magic being presented with an inside view of professional play that doesn't fit with their glorified imaginings about professional circuit play.

When presented with information that causes cognitive dissonance--such as a Magic pro describing the professional experience as one of stress, exhaustion and drudgery--people experience discomfort and are prompted to take action to relieve said discomfort. The mature/reasoned approach to this involves taking the conflicting ideas/beliefs, looking at them from different angles, weighing their respective merits, and ultimately developing an outlook that allows opposing viewpoints to exist within the realm of one's expanded perspective. This requires a comfort level in one's own skin such that one can shine a light on one's held perspectives without feeling threatened...and the willingness to accept that one's closely-held beliefs might not define the entirety of reality.

Regrettably, the more common and "easy" response to cognitive dissonance is to apply fallacious logic or belittle the source of the conflicting viewpoint in order to rationalize one's unwillingness to accept that there may exist valid opinions that conflict with one's own beliefs. One can criticize an author's chosen metaphorical pop-culture riff or quip that the "offending" opinion-holder is mentally defective--Which amounts to a not-so-carefully disguised approximation of sticking one's fingers in one's ears and yelling "NYA NYA NYA I CAN'T HEAR YOU." This fear-driven approach allows one to keep one's own jealously-held beliefs pristinely intact while brushing aside the source of psychological tension...And is both unrealistic and dysfunctional.

Bottom line,if you can't accept that someone else's views are valid--particularly someone who's experience in a given aspect of life is more immersive and broad than your own--perhaps it is you who should consider seeking professional help...

    1. I second this sentiment. Whoever wrote this should know that they're not alone -- and there's always an opportunity to change or ask someone for help. There are overtones of addition/alcoholism as well as the "grayness of life" in this article that I can remember and relate to, and I'd be happy to listen or help.

  29. I'm going to be brutally honest here... I found the Anonymous Magic Pro article highly insulting and offensive. If you don't find the lifestyle of a Magic Pro fulfilling stop doing it.

I, and may others, work 50+ hours a week at my job, never mind the extra time I spend in traffic getting to and from my place of employment. I love what I do.

I would much rather be spending that time traveling and playing Magic, unfortunately because I live in South Africa I've never had that opportunity.

Is living the life of a Magic Pro easy? No. Is having to work 50+ hours at a "normal" job easy? No. If you don't enjoy it, and you don't find it fulfilling stop.

Don't waste your time doing something that you don't find rewarding.

    1. Did you consider applying that logic to your situation? Quitting your job? Since the implication of your post is that you would rather be doing something else?

Not saying you should do it, but definitely saying that your attitude towards the article is way too shallow.

    2. You had a chance for empathy and you decided to add your complaints to the table. Magic 'Pros' are undercompensated for the business they bring to Wotc and tourney organizers, and prize support is laughably bad considering the life investment. We as a community should demand better treatment by the companies which exploit us, but there's too many socially maladjusted man-babies whose problems are the only ones in the world.

  30. I've never played competitive level Magic, but I know lots of borderline national level track athletes. Often, saying you can only succeed if you don't have another job is a lie people tell themselves. The shift in perspective when you realize this is freeing. Or it makes you quit. The game/sport suddenly is the break rather than the job.

Plus, at least with Magic you aren't running 100 miles per week and feeling like crap 300+ days a year.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Definitely agree with this article. I think the main problem is that most people dont understand how addicting Magic is or they are in too much denial to understand an addiction they have themselves. I have a buddy who can't quit this shit. Constantly wanting to qualify for the PT, constantly spending his time trying to over analyze the game and trying to justify that its fun while watching his life pass by him, yeah this shit sucks ass haha. Many people dont see the disconnect between pro tour level and casual play since its just night and day comparison. The deeper you get into this shit, the worst it gets.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sounds like someone needs a break. The sentiment was clear, but instead of an homage to fight club this felt like plagiarism. There are pro players, very smart people, who play pro magic and have jobs/significant others/lives outside of magic. If you truly want something more out of life, maybe try emulating some of them instead of miserably grinding away. Or just take a real vacation and get away from it all, and if the thought of coming back seems soul-crushing, don't.
