On Marcio Carvalho DQ

Wizards recap:  http://magic.wizards.com/en/events/coverage/2014WMC/disqualification

My note from facebook in a more public space:
For anyone who doesn't know, Marcio has done this cheat time and again, such as vs me AND Tom Martell in PT Amsterdam after he did it against Tom and I begged Toby Elliott to have a judge watch my match with Marcio the following round but he declined. I tried to watch him, I really did, but he had the life totals wrong and I go to score pad to correct it and there you go he topdecks a situationally perfect sideboard card (some falter effect) that wasn't good against me or Tom generally but was topdecked in the final turn against both of us after some distraction tactics. Tom had warned me Marcio cheated him but didn't say how so I didn't know EXACTLY what to look for, just to ask Toby for help. After that draft pod Tom and I compared notes and it was same cheat - card "topdecked" off sideboard or from hidden zone after distraction tactics. Fuck this guy.

Is it possible he really did legitimately topdeck all these cards against all these people over the years and is really bad at counting his deck, putting away his sideboard, keeping the life total, etc.?  Ya it's possible, but don't bet your tournament entry fee on it if they let Marcio ever play again.

  1. In fairness to Toby who probably can't comment because an investigation is pending: I hope Toby doesn't think I'm throwing him under the bus, I think he's literally the best judge we have and has helped try and catch Marcio in the past I'm sure, I was just recounting what took place and what contributed to my frustration that day and many days since.

  2. You two are so great that when you lose, your opp must have cheated. Marcio Carvalho is a way better player than you two will ever be and just because Wizards doesn't like most non-Americans, specially Portuguese and specially Marcio, it doesn't mean he did something wrong. They have banned him unfairly in the past when he was level 8 and now that he was getting top8 after top8 they decided to do it again.

An honest mistake that most other people would just get a gameloss (sometimes you just forget an exiled card or a card slips under the scorepad or deckbox) gets him a DQ and probably a big ban.

And at least this time he did make a mistake (not and intentional one), his first ban he did nothing and got DQed and banned at the best moment of his magic career.

Meanwhile some known American cheaters are still playing the game, seen like heros and some even in th Hall of Fame (should be Hall of Shame).

    1. Either your friend is very good at magic and is a cheater or he is the caliber of drooling, dimwitted, flailing, simpleton that can't keep track of where his cards end up on the table. Only one of those things can be true. Cards don't get under your scorepad unless you put them there or you are an idiot.

    2. Like Carlos has already said, it's a team format and it's much easier to check on your team mates between your games and forget one card.

    3. I'm not usually one for mudslinging, but making accusations of possible cheating is a much better policy than waiting until you have solid proof. The fact of the beast is cheaters will thrive if they can leave a wake of dozens of people who are 75% sure that they were cheated. By sharing these anecdotes, it becomes clear really quickly when someone is a habitual cheater.

Sure, it might mean that someone gets an undo smear or two. But if they're really an honest player, the single accusation will fade away when nothing else comes forward.

  3. Or maybe he went to help his team mate when his game 1 was over and when he got back he forgot the card exiled with the whip the previous match and presented a 59 card deck. At least he didnt lie to a judge like your friend Paul Rietzl for whom i had a lot of restpect until this day who told the judge he had done it against him in Amsterdam. Go check if they played.
Anyway isnt anyone cleaner then me in magic and i told Marcio if i would see him do anything i would be the one to denounce him and since ive been watching his games for the past 2 years theres nothing remotly shady with his play.
If u can tell me why Gaudenis is still playing after what happened in Dublin let me know.

    1. Just spoke to Paul on the phone, he said he informed the judges of what happened to ME AND TOM not what happened to him. Other people overheard the conversation and can verify. Paul didn't lie, and I have to correct that error before you spread it further.

    2. If the 4 people that were there didnt understand correctly what he said i do apologise for what i wrote of him.
Do you have any opinion on the Gaudenis DQ in Dublin?

    3. Gau is still playing because it was his first offense (although I do think he probably should've gotten banned for lying about what happened after). This is clearly NOT Marcio's first offense, despite whatever you seem to think.

    4. I know its not his first offence. Do you know why he was banned the first time?
About Gau i still have no idea how he wasnt banned cause that was for sure intentional... forgeting one card on the exiled zone on a team format on the other hand... it wasnt under the the life pad as ive seen in some tweets.

    5. I love the Portuguese posters bursting in to defend The Cheat, especially with such gems as "Wizards doesn't like most non-Americans, specially Portuguese".

I'm pretty certain Wizards of the Coast do not have a vendetta against Portuguese Magic players, given that it's a tiny, insignificant country that no one cares about sticking out of Spain's arse.

    6. Are you the same person as you are at yous 15/16? If you are theres somenthing wrong with you. people make mistake and if you learn from your mistakes that means that you growing. But maybe you are perfect and never make something that you regret but i mean if u didnt 1 of 2 you are a big fat liar orrrrr... you didnt try to grow and be a better person!

    7. Oh Carlos, bebe água. Isto não tem defesa.

    8. If this guy pays an extra toll for being a cheater in the past, that isn't something to whine about. Maybe it will prevent someone from starting down the path in the first place.

Also - I haven't heard anyone in the "defense" explain exactly where this card was - if not under the life pad. If it was in such an obvious location, I don't see how they would have gone so far as to not notice it prior to the game starting.

  4. Márcio is probably the best magic player in the world. Just stop playing the game... This is a game for AMERICANS not for europeans... Eventually mtg will die i am 100 per cent sure... The mtg press and this idiots talking about a guy they do not even know... And a little ps: You consider yourself a pro player when you MUST call a judge to see if your opponent will cheat on you? God you must be really bad.. Do'nt you have eyes to see it yourself? Shame on you...If you got cheated ( supposing) you know who is the fault of that? Yours because yours! Only the idiots get cheated. Channel fireball is like the Mafia of MTG... Thank lord i quit mtg right when u guys started to manipulate everyone...

  5. Being a Portuguese, I should say all this rubbish about wizzards launching a witch's hunt against the portuguese players it's just pure bullshit.
He cheated, he had the history of already cheated, so he got DQ that's the rulling, end of story.

Good lord, this vendetta conspiracy theories are just so plain stupid ... Facepalm.

    Keep playing mtg ;)

  6. I really dont know if he was cheating or not, if he was he really need to be punished. But about the witch hunt...wizards dont witch hunt portuguese players they just want that the americans dominate this game and the proof is that there are more GP´s in usa than in the rest of the world and i ask the reason? Gp´s in europe always have more people, if the problem is the size of the country, Russia is the biggest country in the world and they have a lot of good players, normally in the online magic because they dont have gp´s at they door.
And besides that you may noticed that in some decisions they really favour the american players, you can see LSV is a hall of famer and he had one good year and just one pt and not manny gp´s, thats just one situation.

  7. ho i forgot, and how about wafo tapa and matignon...if they were americans you may have sure they wont be banished for so manny time....

  8. One of most important values in America is justice. When someone is guilty of wrongdoing, justice must be swift and firm. A DQ is not a ban, but one may follow shortly. He let down his team and his country. What a pathetic representative of the Portuguese Magic community.

Jared Boettcher is an American. He cheated. He was banned and could not play in the World Champs. He was a pathetic representative as well. Justice was done.

WOTC bans and DQ's cheaters. They don't care about skin color, geography, or language spoken. Two other Americans have been banned recently as well. I don't see the prejudice on WOTC's part. Kudos to them for swift and firm justice.

    1. I'm not sure we value justice... we like outrage and misfortune in others.

  9. I'm sorry to see that people have such a poor opinion on Marcio, even among his peers aka the best players in the World.
I'm not a Spike, but I like to play in PTQ's and GPt's, hang out and play some good Magic. Marcio was present a couple of times. He is not friendly, nor gentle when playing: he is sharp, focused and with only the win in his mind. That said, there was never a hint Marcio was dishonest or using shady tactics. I never heard any of his Portuguese rivals accusing him in tournaments.
He is also a member of team MTG Madness, playtesting with great players like Shenhar, Butakov, Dezany, Dickman, Dagen, Mackl and many others. I'm sure he is only allowed to be among this great players because Marcio is indeed one of the finnest. And I'm sure, if he was a cheater, some of his teammates would notice and kick him out. Team MTG Madness is growing and would worry about its image.
About the WMC case in particular, I was not there, I won't comment if the card was under or on top of the life pad, the table or wherever (according to Marcio himself, it was clearly on top of the table, where he usually leaves his exile zone). It's meaningless. Mistakes can happen, specially when you're under the gun and focusing in other things besides your own game.
About the Amsterdam case, this is the first time I heard about it. I have no reason to doubt Matt or Tom, two players I respect a lot and cheered in the past (for the Aristocrats in PTGatecrash and for Matt when he last top8'ed). But "feeling" that you were cheated and having proof that you were in fact cheated are two different things. Loosing to top-decks leave me mad salty too.
But I bet even you guys have experienced it before "he's winning a lot, probably cheated", "top decked, he was just lucky". It's part of the process, specially when you are highly competitive and not a friendly person, like Marcio.
I bet Wizards will make the correct decisions from now on. It's important to get rid of cheaters, but we can't have a justice with just swords.
    Keep on tappin' o/

  10. I really hope Wizards can ban Marcio for a long time now after yet another cheating scandal. Cheating in Magic has to stop. It has been going on for way too long now. We have to name and shame the cheaters and get them out of our game we all know and love, before they destroy it.

  11. I am portuguese and i hope Márcio get ban if is guilty. I don't know him but talking to some friends of mine who play against him, many says he is a cheater. Theres is no place for cheters and he must be punish for embarrassing our country. Defending him just because we are portuguese doesn't make sense.

  12. I am a fan of clean Magic but I am also a fan of clean clear headed peers that should just stick to facts and never to conjectures, speculations or delving into the past. Its not right that peers like Sperling, Chapin, Reitzl, Martell (Hall of Famers/Wannabee's with added responsibilities for general image of Magic) discuss publicly something that must be discussed only by the involved parties (Márcio, PT team, Israeli team, Judges and wizards staff with a say on this matter). Intentionally or not he got DQ by presenting an illegal deck. Period! That just by itself is a little bit sad but its even worse reading things written by people that we all kind of looked up to just jumping into rush conclusions.
